The Great Wall

The Great WallStarting from Shanhaiguan in the east and ending at Jiayuguan in the west, the Great Wall has an approximate length of 6,7O0 kilometres. The section of the Wall at Badaling is 75 kilometres from Beijing. The earliest part of the Wall was built during the Warring State Period(476-211 B.C.)and continued the project in subsequent dynasties. The Great Wall averages 7.8 metres in height and 6.5 metres wide at the base and 5.8 metres wide at the top. A watch-tower was built every hundred metres.

BaDaLing Section of Great WallThe section adjacent to Juyong Pass and Badaling Hill in Beijing region is typical of the Great Wall of the Ming Dynasty. The height of the wall, varying as the terrain undulates, averages 7.8 metres and rises up to a maximum of 8.4 metres in certain places. The base of the wall is paved with huge granite slabs weighing over l,000 kilos each. The wall averages 6.4 metres wide at the base and 5.8 meters at the top. Along the outer side of the top, there are battlements 1.7 metres in height while a parapet used as a balustrades is on the inner side. Observatien holes are opened upper part of the battlements, with shooting apertures below. the top of the wall is evenly paved with square bricks.(The right picture is BaDaLing Section)

JuYongGuan Section of Great WallLocated 10 kilometers south of the Badaling section of the Great Wall and built in an 18.5-kilometre-long valley, the pass has always been an important gateway northwest of Beijing. The name is believed to have its origin in the workers and slaves conscripted to build the Great Wall in ancient times. Cloud Terrace, built in 1345, was originally the base of a pagoda over looking the main road of the town of the pass. The arched gate of the terrace and the walls inside the arch are decorated with carvings. of elephants, lions, birds, flowers and heavenly kings as well as charms in six languages-Sanskrit, Tibetan, Phats pa (Mongolian), Uygur, West Xia and Han.

JinShanLing Section of Great WallLocated in Miyun County northeast of Beijing, the Jinshanling division of the Great Wall, like the Simatai division, belongs to the Gubeikou section of the colossal defence barrier.

 

 

The Forbidden City

forbitten cityThe Forbidden City, now called Palace Museum, is located in the center of Beijing. Extending 750 meters from east to west and 960 meters from north to south, the 720,000-square-meter city is the largest palatial complex in the world. It is surrounded by a moat, which is 52 meters wide and six meters deep, and by a wall, which is three kilometers long and 10 meters high. On the wall are four gates with towers above them: Wumen in the south, Shenwumen in the north, Donghuamen in the east and Xihuamen in the west. On the four corners of the wall stand four turret towers, each with three roofs and 72 roof ridges. They are masterpieces of ancient Chinese architecture.

Magnificent and awe-inspiring, that is how every visitor would describe the Forbidden City, which served as the seat of imperial power during the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368-1911).

Tai He DianHall of Supreme Harmony (Tai He Dian) is the most important ceremonies of the feudal dynasties were held: including the emperors¡¯ascension to the throne, their marriage, and their conferring of titles on officials.

 

 

Zhong He DianHall of Medium Harmony (Zhong He Dian) standing behind is where the emperors rested before ceremonies and receiving officials.

 

 

 

 

Bao He DianHall of Protective Harmony (Bao He Dian), is where the emperors gave banquets and interviewed in person successful candidates of imperial examinations.
